MaP Graduate Symposium 2020
The MaP Graduate Symposium took place for the 15th time on 1&2 July 2020 & for the 1st time online. Over 205 participants followed top-class talks, a broad poster session, interactive elements & many awards!
The Download program (PDF, 611 KB) of the 15th edition of the MaP Graduate Symposium consisted of 15 scientific presentations – including the presentations of the three MaP Award Finalists – and 47 posters in total. All abstracts of our outstanding talks and comprehensive posters can be found in the Download symposium booklet (PDF, 2.1 MB).
MaP Award 2020
This year’s MaP Award – the prize for the most promising doctoral thesis in ‘Materials and Processes’ completed in the previous year at ETH Zurich – was awarded to Dr. Felix Eltes (Multifunctional Ferroic Materials, D-MATL). We would like to recognize the other nominees Dr. Lucas Armbrecht (Bioanalytics, D-BSSE) and Dr. Flavia Timpu (Optical Nanomaterials, D-PHYS) for their auspicious doctoral theses.
Poster Awards and Prizes
Exceptional and entertaining 2-min Flash Poster Presentations were given by the six MaP Poster Prize Finalists selected by the Poster Jury. As in previous years, only pen and paper were allowed to prepare their poster presentation. Mario Saucedo (D-BSSE, 1st), Nicole Kleger (D-MATL, 2nd), and Madeleine Fellner (D-MATL, 3rd) have been selected by the audience as the winners - well done!
The MaP People's Choice Poster Award 2020 was awarded to Nicole Kleger for her poster on 3D printed salt templates for Magnesium scaffolds, based on an audience vote only.
Additionally, three Industry Poster Awards of CHF 500 prize money each, have been awarded by representatives of external page avantama and external page BASF. The Avantama Most Significant Commercialization Potential Poster Award as well as the BASF Sustainability Poster Award have been given to Madeleine Fellner (D-MATL). The third poster prize, the BASF Digital Manufacturing Poster Award, was given to Marius Wagner (D-MATL) for his poster on «Additive Manufacturing of 316L Stainless Steel via Fused Deposition».
The MaP Mastermind was awarded to Mario Saucedo (D-BSSE), for answering the most scientific questions following every presentation session and riddles during the MaP Mixer correctly. Congratulations!
Interactive Elements
One of the major aims of the MaP Graduate Symposium is to engage interaction, collaboration and transfer of knowledge among participants. We promoted this aim by two different sessions:
During the Round Tables session, moderators from academia and industry discussed and brainstormed based on leading questions of different topics e.g. “How to Collaborate?!”, “Science, Climate Action & Sustainability”, or “Diversity in Science”. Using virtual brainstorming, the participants immersed in conversations quickly and lively (see image).
At the end of the first day, the MaP Mixer session was organized as the social gathering of the symposium. Within groups of four participants introduced themselves to everybody and solved scientific riddles in within the group – , if you would like to know the answers!
